Just Ask Xero (JAX) vs CFO Pal
Xero has built an AI assistant into Xero, and during the beta it costs you nothing extra. That is a fair question to put to us, so here is a straight answer, including the cases where JAX is enough and you should not pay us anything.
Start here: JAX might be all you need
If you are on Xero, your bookkeeping is up to date, and what you want is to ask questions about your data and have routine work done for you, JAX is a strong answer and it is already in your subscription. It reconciles bank lines automatically, creates invoices from a plain-English message, handles expense claims and pulls reports without you navigating menus. We are not going to pretend you need to pay us £199/month + VAT to duplicate that.
The difference is who starts the conversation
JAX answers when asked. That is what an assistant does, and it does it well. But the business owners who get into trouble are rarely the ones asking questions. They are the ones who did not think to ask, because it was a busy quarter and the numbers looked fine in March.
CFO Pal is built the other way round. A written brief arrives every Monday morning whether or not you log in. If cash drops below your threshold, a debtor slips, a budget breaks or spending spikes, you hear the same day by email, SMS or WhatsApp. You do not have to know the right question, or remember to ask it.
Three practical differences
It only covers Xero. That is fine if all your work is in Xero. If you have clients or businesses on QuickBooks or Sage, JAX does not reach them and you will end up with two ways of working. CFO Pal treats all three the same, which is also why our practice programme works for a firm with a mixed client base.
It works inside the books, we work above them. JAX reconciles, invoices and codes. It writes to your ledger. CFO Pal only ever reads and never writes anything, because our job is interpretation rather than bookkeeping: forecasting with scenarios, budget variance, revenue concentration, debtor behaviour and a board-ready management accounts pack.
Our AI is not allowed to do arithmetic. Every figure CFO Pal quotes is calculated by our own deterministic engine from your accounting data and handed to the model as fact, and any monetary figure in an AI output that does not already exist in that pre-computed data fails our test suite. Xero publishes no equivalent constraint, and JAX's external research runs through an OpenAI partnership, which is worth treating as a starting point rather than a final answer.
On price, honestly
JAX is included today. Xero has said AI features may move to paid tiers or usage-based pricing from FY27 onwards, so "free" is a current fact rather than a permanent one. Even so, if budget is tight and you are Xero-only, use JAX. Come to us when you want something watching the business between the questions you remember to ask.
Whichever tool you compare it to
What CFO Pal does differently
Set JAX aside for a moment. Five things are true of CFO Pal against every product on this list, and each one is enforced by a test in our own code rather than by a sentence on a page.
It only ever reads. We connect to Xero, QuickBooks or Sage and never write anything back. Our job is interpretation, not bookkeeping, so there is nothing we could break in your ledger.
The AI is not allowed to do arithmetic. Every figure it quotes is calculated first from your accounting data and handed to the model as fact. An answer containing a monetary figure that is not already in that data fails our test suite.
If the numbers do not reconcile, it says nothing. Before any AI output is written, we check that the balance sheet balances, that the profit and loss agrees with the ledger, and that cash bridges from one month to the next. If a check fails, the model is not called and you are told why, rather than handed a confident figure that is wrong.
It starts the conversation. A written brief lands every Monday and an alert arrives the day something moves, whether or not you log in. A dashboard waits to be opened. A finance director does not.
Xero, QuickBooks and Sage are treated the same. Every check runs on every platform, so a business with two companies on two systems, or a firm with a mixed client base, gets one way of working.
Side by side
JAX is in active beta and gaining features quickly. Rows describing it are drawn from Xero's public announcements and support material; where something is not published we say so rather than claiming it is absent.

The honest summary
They are not really the same product. JAX makes Xero faster to use. CFO Pal watches the business and tells you when something needs attention, across Xero, QuickBooks and Sage alike. If you are Xero-only and happy to go and ask, JAX is included and you should use it. If you want the questions asked on your behalf, and an answer you can audit, that is what you would be paying us for.
