What is the cash conversion cycle?

The cash conversion cycle (CCC) measures how many days pass between paying out cash and getting it back. The formula is: stock days plus debtor days minus creditor days. A shorter cycle means your cash comes back faster; a longer one means more of your money is tied up in the gap between spending and earning.

If your business doesn't hold stock

Most service businesses (agencies, consultancies, contractors) have no stock days at all, which simplifies the formula to just debtor days minus creditor days. If you invoice on 30-day terms and pay suppliers on 45-day terms, your cash conversion cycle is actually negative: you are being paid before you have to pay out, which is about as strong a cash position as a business can be in. If it is the other way round, every sale you make ties up cash for longer than it takes to earn it back.

Why it matters more than any single metric

Revenue and profit both describe the past. The cash conversion cycle describes what happens next: whether growth will fund itself or whether every new order will need financing to bridge the gap until payment arrives. A business can be profitable on paper and still run out of cash purely because its conversion cycle is too long for its growth rate.

How CFO Pal helps

CFO Pal works debtor days and creditor days out from your invoice ledger, so a business that holds no stock already has its full cash conversion cycle without assembling the formula by hand. Both halves come from the same ledger rather than one from the ledger and one from the P&L, which keeps VAT on the same side of the sum and the answer in one set of units.

CFO Pal does not track inventory, so a stock-holding business has to supply its own stock days. That is a real gap rather than a detail: for a retailer or a manufacturer, stock days is often the largest of the three, and a cycle computed without it describes a different business from yours.

Stop guessing. Start knowing.

CFO Pal calculates your debtor days and creditor days automatically from your invoice ledger, every month.
