Every alternative, compared honestly

Most comparisons pick one competitor. But the real choice most business owners are making is not "CFO Pal or Fathom". It's "keep doing this myself, ask my accountant, hire someone, paste it into ChatGPT, or use software." Here is the same set of jobs, graded the same honest way, against every realistic option.

How each option actually holds up

Some of this is achievable with any of the alternatives below. The question is what it costs you to keep it working, in money, in hours, or in things it simply never does.

Accountant and fractional CFO cost ranges are typical UK market figures at the time of writing (September 2026), not quotes. 'ChatGPT / Claude, ad hoc' describes the category generally, and named reporting tools (Fathom, Syft, Float) have their own comparison pages.

Nothing here is mutually exclusive

You always need an accountant for compliance. That never goes away, whatever else you add. Plenty of businesses combine CFO Pal for the day-to-day monitoring with a fractional CFO brought in quarterly for the decisions that need a person in the room. The point of this page isn't to say one option wins outright. It's that most of the work business owners are doing by hand today (in a spreadsheet, waiting on an email, or pasting figures into a chat window) is work that can simply run itself.

Whichever tool you compare it to

What CFO Pal does differently

Five things are true of CFO Pal against anything you might compare it with, and each one is enforced by a test in our own code rather than by a sentence on a page.

It only ever reads. We connect to Xero, QuickBooks or Sage and never write anything back. Our job is interpretation, not bookkeeping, so there is nothing we could break in your ledger.

The AI is not allowed to do arithmetic. Every figure it quotes is calculated first from your accounting data and handed to the model as fact. An answer containing a monetary figure that is not already in that data fails our test suite.

If the numbers do not reconcile, it says nothing. Before any AI output is written, we check that the balance sheet balances, that the profit and loss agrees with the ledger, and that cash bridges from one month to the next. If a check fails, the model is not called and you are told why, rather than handed a confident figure that is wrong.

It starts the conversation. A written brief lands every Monday and an alert arrives the day something moves, whether or not you log in. A dashboard waits to be opened. A finance director does not.

Xero, QuickBooks and Sage are treated the same. Every check runs on every platform, so a business with two companies on two systems, or a firm with a mixed client base, gets one way of working.

Every figure is checked against your ledger before it is shown
